There are some great restaurants at the Disney World Resort that serve delicious, high-quality meals, but there’s also a lot of junk food. Burgers, pizza, cotton candy, turkey legs and Mickey Mouse-shaped popsicles abound, making it hard for families to eat healthily, especially at quick service stops and when snacking between line queues.
Obesity is a major health epidemic that has taken center stage in recent years as obesity rates have soared, especially among America’s youth. Disney wants to empower families to make healthy eating choices while on vacation, and to promote its most nutritious food, the company has introduced the Mickey Check, an icon that will be used to denote nutritious food sold in stores, online, and at restaurants and kiosks in its US Parks and Resorts. Expect to see the Mickey Check on nutritious food everywhere by the end of 2012.
In addition to its new food labels, the Walt Disney Company is also taking action against obesity by becoming the first major media company to introduce a new set of standards for the kid-targeted food advertising that it will air during programming on the Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney and Disney websites. Food and beverage advertisers and sponsors will be required to meet Disney’s new nutritional guidelines (based on federal standards) by 2015.
