Bring Back Disney Channel Classics

Bring Back Disney Channel Classics

If you’re currently in your 20s or 30s, you know that the TV shows of your childhood are nothing like the TV of today. Thanks in part to an earnest social networking fanbase, on July 25th, Teen Nick debuted The ’90s Are All That, a two-hour weeknight programming block featuring a rotating lineup of some of the most popular Nickelodeon shows from the ’90s.

Currently, the TV block includes episodes of All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa Explains It All, and Doug. The ’90s Are All That website has even more to offer with a rotating lineup of clips and episodes of Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Rugrats, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, CatDog, Ren & Stimpy, and more! Website fans can chat, view media, vote in polls, and enter sweepstakes to win ’90s-era products! Remember GAK, anyone?

As one of the millions of former kids who grew up watching these classic Nickelodeon shows in a regular afternoon lineup, I think the late night programming block is fantastic. Now the kids of the 21st Century can see the best of what the ’90s had to offer, and they’ll have to agree that the ’90s were indeed All That. If the Disney Channel were to follow Teen Nick’s example and bring back some of their own ’90s hits, then I, and millions of other 20-something-year-olds, would be in absolute nostalgia heaven.

When I was growing up, the Disney Channel was a premium pay channel that hadn’t become a part of standard cable packages in my city. My Disney Channel exposure was limited to the one week a year that the Disney Channel became free for non-subscribers as a way to attract new customers. My parents refused to subscribe, but my Dad recorded several tapes of Disney episodes during the promotional weeks, and I sustained myself on the same handful of episodes, watching them over and over again, until he could record another batch.

By the time I was in high school, the Disney Channel had finally joined standard cable, and every weekday afternoon, I’d happily watch episodes of Pepper Ann, Recess, The Famous Jett Jackson, and later, Even Stevens, Lizzie McGuire, and That’s So Raven.

I’m not the only one who misses the Disney Channel original series of the ’90s. There are several Facebook groups dedicated to bringing back the best of the ’90s era Disney, including I Want My ’90s Disney Channel Shows Back! and If Teen Nick Can Bring Back ’90s Shows, Then So Should Disney.

And now, I propose my own retro Disney Channel ’90s lineup! It’s a mix of some of my favorite live action and animated series – ten hours of quality programming every day!

Yes, Disney should make a Classic Disney channel if they aren’t going to change their crummy current programming. I loved the Disney Programming up until the late 90′s/early2000′s. If they made a classic Disney Channel they could show as far back as the 50′s Disney programming, wonderful world of color etc. all the way through shows like Avonlea and Gummy Bears, etc. I have small children myself now and would love programming I could enjoy with them! How can we get Disney to do this?

  18. Dylan says:

Classic Disney shows, channels, and blocks were, along with CN blocks and toonami, were some of the greatest moments of television history. Toon Disney and Toonami were the greatest. Disney XD is okay but it should have not replaced toon disney. Also what is up with almost all of the disney shows having only 65 episodes?

Disney and CN were both great before 2007.

Hate My Baby-sitter’s a Vampire. And Phineas and Ferb. I basically don’t like the new shows very much, but I do like Shake it up, that’s the only show I enjoy. But I admit it’s dumb at times. I miss Toon Disney alot :( I miss Big Movie Shows. I’m 13, and out of that list I’ve only seen Timon and Pumba, Little Mermaid, Recess, Aladdin, Gargoyles, Chip and Dale, and TaleSpin. I like things a little newer than those, like Lizzie McGuire, That So Raven, Kim Possible, American Dragon, Even Stevens, and Phil of the Future. I was really young, but I still remember most of those shows. I would watch them with my older sister (20). I was glad Teen Nick decided to do 90′s are All That, because I hope Disney will decide to do it with their shows too….we need to have a petition or something. Seriously lol. Watching these shows on youtube is getting old..( what i can find of them, anyway.)

  23. Sonia says:

Plz Disney bring back these classics……I miss my shows that I grew up watching……and I am sure that the kids today will enjoy them to…….also u forgot goof troop!!!!!

  24. M!CK says:

You forgot to add FAST FORWARD, BABYSITTERS CLUB, MICKEY MOUSE CLUB, and the original Disney Channel Movies like NOT QUITE HUMAN, NOT QUITE HUMAN II, STILL NOT QUITE HUMAN, etc. into the schedule. Also, they should air the ORIGINAL BUMPERS to go along with the original programming. i.e. the HOT DAYS, COOL NIGHTS theme, TRIPLE FEATURE FRIDAY, BONUS THURSDAY, TOONiN TUESDAY, etc. And don’t narrow it to just the ’90s, go as far back into the early ’80s and broadcast the likes of WELCOME TO POOH CORNER, UNDER THE UMBRELLA TREE and KIDS INCORPORATED. If you follow this formula, you will surely have high ratings. Rename DISNEY CHANNEL XD to DISNEY CHANNEL CLASSICS. After all, the Disney Channel was really the first network for KIDS AND FAMILIES. Nickelodeon started out as a local station in Ohio called Pinwheel, while the Disney Channel was a National broadcast from the very start.
