Disney Animation: Trivia Fun, Part 2

Disney Animation: Trivia Fun, Part 2

Walt Disney Studios proudly presents its 50th animated feature, Tangled, which opened Thanksgiving weekend to rave critical reviews and a strong $48.8 million opening weekend, just short of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One’s second weekend haul of $49.1 million.

If you are like me and you grew up with the best of Disney dominating your movie shelf (The Lion King, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Bambi, etc), you may still have a hard time naming 25 of these animated films, much less all 50. Below is the full list of Disney’s Animated Classics, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Tangled, with trivia about each film.

11. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

  • The two segments of the film are “The Wind in the Willows” (based on the story by Kenneth Grahame) and “The Legend of Sleepy Hallow” (based on the story by Washington Irving)
  • “The Wind in the Willows” segment inspired “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride”, a dark ride that was fully operational on Disneyland’s opening day in 1955 and which remains a featured park attraction, more than 50 years later
  • Mr. Toad’s obsession with motor cars in “The Wind in the Willows” is dubbed “Motor Mania”, which is the title of a popular Goofy cartoon released the following year

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

  • The film was the first feature-length, cel-animated motion picture ever produced commercially
  • It is one of only two animated films ranked in AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time (1997) (the other being Disney’s Fantasia)
  • Originally dubbed “Disney’s Folly” by those convinced the film would fail, but by 1939, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the highest grossing film of all time – until Gone With the Wind’s release later that year
  • Although not officially in competition, Walt Disney received an Honorary Academy Award for the film in the form of one full-sized statue and seven miniature ones

Disney's Yacht Club Resort

Disney's Yacht Club Resort, photo by Valerie Champagne

Now that winter is creeping up on the Northeast, it’s a perfect time to reflect on my September honeymoon in sunny, temperate Florida. For our nine day stay at the Disney World Resort, the Yacht Club Resort was recommended to us by our Small World Vacations travel agent, and my husband and I chose the deluxe resort for two major reasons: 1. the close proximity to a fabulous selection of restaurants in Epcot’s International World Showcase and 2. the phenomenal Stormalong Bay pool complex.

Hollywood Studios…Then & Now

Hollywood Studios…Then & Now

The biggest change to Disney’s Hollywood Studios (formerly Disney’s MGM Studios) in the last decade isn’t the park’s name. MGM Studios was officially rechristened Hollywood Studios in January 2008 after years of litigation with the now defunct MGM Studios over the use of the MGM brand name in the park which doubled as a working production studio.

In the two brochures below from 2000 and 2010, you can see another major park change, in addition to all of the new attractions. The iconic Earful Tower, a Hollywood-inspired model water tower, was replaced in 2001 by a giant replica of The Sorcerer’s Hat from Fantasia (1940), now the new official symbol for the park. The Earful Tower is still in the park and can be viewed by guests while on the Studio Backlot Tour.
